What is needed for a transmission rebuild?

A transmission rebuild is a very complicated task that requires a fair amount of skill to get right. If you never worked on a vehicle will for, then rebuilding a transmission might not be a good thing for you to start with. There are over 1000 individual parts on the typical automatic transmission. And if you don’t to install each of these transmission parts correctly, you can experience catastrophic failure that will cost you both time and money.

Tools

Before you attempt any transmission rebuild, you’re going to need tools that likely go beyond the ordinary hand tool set. Reaching some of the out of the way bolts and fasteners may require extensions of varying lengths as well as swivels. Sturdy prybars are going to be necessary, as well as a number of specialized tools like snap ring removers, spring compressors and other tools that may be specific to your transmission.

Time

The average removal time for an automatic transmission is between 4-6 hours. It will take an additional 4-8 hours to perform a complete transmission rebuild (depending on your skill level). But if you’ve never rebuilt a transmission before, it could take significantly longer. That’s okay though, because you want to get it right and may we learn a new skill in the process. So don’t plan to do this in an afternoon.

The correct transmission parts

Although you might not know if there’s any damage inside your transmission before you open it up, there’s a few transmission parts that you’re going to need regardless. The first one is what’s known as a master transmission rebuild kit. This is basically a collection of all the main soft parts/where items that wear out and need replacing regardless. Some examples of soft parts include; gaskets, seals, friction items like transmission bands or clutch discs, bearings, bushings in transmission filter.

Valve body

Rebuilding a valve body is a lot like rebuilding a mechanical watch. There’s a bunch of tiny parts, all of which have to be perfectly in tune. Heat and wear can also cause small pressure leaks, which can lead to big drivability problems. Fortunately, companies like Street Smart Transmission offer completely remanufactured valve bodies that are bench tested prior to shipment to ensure a plug-and-play installation.

If you want to solve all of your valve body related issues, and have the security of a 3 Year/No Hassle Warranty, then you need to consider a remanufactured valve body from Street Smart Transmission. Each one is built in a state of the art factory, by Certified valve body technicians. And our strict quality control process ensures that each valve body that we ship, will exceed the manufacturer’s specifications using a road simulation tester.

How It’s Done

  • Using specialized equipment, each valve body is inspected for warping, cracks, and tensile strength prior to the build
  • Every valve, piston, spring and bore is tested to ensure that it conforms to OE specifications
  • Wear components like valve body gaskets are replaced
  • Solenoids get bench tested prior to it leaving
  • Pressure switch and speed sensors are tested

Once finished, every remanufactured valve body is thoroughly bench tested using a Superflow AXILINE Valve Body Tester. This state of the art machine is able to simulate actual road conditions, which allows the shift points and functionality to be fine-tuned prior to shipment.
