TR3650 Transmission Overview
Designed and manufactured by Tremec, the TR-3650 is a 5-speed manual transmission that was first introduced in the SN95 2001 Ford Mustang GT and 2001 Ford Mustang Cobra. They were installed halfway through the 2001 model year, and carried the transmission code K. Earlier models were equipped with the T-45 transmission, and had the transmission code 6. FoMoCo needed a stronger gearbox that could withstand additional torque output, so they turn to Tremec for a design. It would see service in the 2001 – 2004 Mustang GT, Ford Mustang Cobra, Ford Mustang Bullitt, 2003 – 2004 Ford Mustang Mach I, the S197 2005 – 2010 Ford Mustang GT and the S197 2008 – 2009 Ford Mustang Bullitt. The TR 3650 transmission was also used the Australian built Ford Falcon BA.
What Transmission Do I Have?
The Tremec TR3650 transmission featured a more robust 11-inch clutch disc, compared to the 10.5” plate found in the old T45 transmission. There is a difference between the 2001 – 2004 TR3650 transmission and the 2005 – 2010 TR3650 transmission; first-gen versions had a conventional throwout bearing and cable operated clutch fork. The second-gen versions got a hydraulically operated throwout bearing situated along the input shaft. It also got a revised design, where the shifter mounts to the body, instead of the transmission. The tail shaft design also changed from a slip-yoke to a fixed flange.
