Toyota Camry Transmission Problems & Cost | U241E

The Toyota Camry was equipped with the U241E, A541E and A140E transmission in certain models. Introduced for the 1983 model year, the Toyota Camry was designed to give Americans a reliable alternative to all the compact FWD cars that were pouring out of Detroit. Within a few short years the Camry was a success, and by 1997 it had become the best selling car in America. Today’s Camry is a lot more luxurious and athletic than its predecessors. There’s fresh styling, a metric ton of features, and the choice of 4cyl, V6 or hybrid power. The cabin has also been reimagined, and it’s now filled with high quality materials, soft touch points, accent stitching, and tasteful chrome accents. Toyota has gone to great lengths to shed the appliance-like feel of previous Camry’s. But it’s still every bit as durable as you would expect. Does something seem wrong with your Camry? Let’s look at some of the most common Toyota Camry transmission problems, and see what you can do to get your car back on the road.

Common Toyota Camry Transmission Problems

No reverse – A140 transmission
Problem – The transmission upshifts properly, but will not engage reverse.
Solution – The overdrive drum will have to be replaced.

Premature upshifts at moderate to full throttle – A140 transmission
Problem – The transmission may prematurely upshift through several gears under moderate or heavy throttle. It may shift normally during light throttle application.
Solution – One or more of the A140 solenoids could be restricted

Harsh shifts or shift flares between 2-3 or 3-4 – U250E transmission
Problem – Shortly after starting up, vehicles may experience shift flares or unusually hard shifts into third or fourth gear. The problem may go away, but return after the vehicle has sat overnight.
Solution – It’s possible that the battery needs to be replaced (the voltage is too low, resulting in the ECU going into the “relearn” process after starting up), or the ECU grounds are corroded.

Lack of Response
Leaking Fluid
Low Fluid
Burning Smell
Grinding or Shaking
Whining, Clunking or Humming

Toyota Camry Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)

TSB TC002-02 – Harsh 2-3 shift at high altitude
2002 Lexus ES300
Problem – Drivers may experience an unusually harsh 2-3 upshift during wide open throttle acceleration at elevations above 3000 feet.
Solution – A revised valve body has been developed to correct this issue.

TSB TC010-06 – Harsh 5-4 downshift on deceleration – U250E transmission
2006 – 2007 Toyota Camry
Problem – Owners with the Toyota Camry U250E transmission may notice an unusually harsh 5-4 downshift when the transmission is at normal operating temperature, and the vehicle was traveling above 45 mph and has decelerated through 28 mph.
Solution – A revised line pressure control solenoid assembly will have to be installed.

I have a 2006 Solara 4 cylinder and it shifts fine from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, but if I am going uphill with decent speed and it shifts from 3rd to 4th, the car shakes and the rpms bounce for a few seconds until it finally shifts. Then into 5th it’s fine. Downshifts are quick and flawless. 190,000 miles. Engine is 100% flawless and runs strong.

2010 Toyota Camry transmission shudder. Things I did to try to fix it change outer tie rod on the left side, additive for fuel injector, New side axle, new transmission fluid and filter, none of these things fix the problem. Saw a video of this guy using a product called Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx . Problem solve I hope this can help somebody it did for me.

When did the shudder happen for you? Was it during downshifts? Especially from 50mph down to 25mph? That’s the problem I am having so wondering if you had the same thing and if the Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx fixed that for you?

I have a 1999 Toyota Camry. Recently my car has been acting like it doesn’t wanna shift out of first gear. It goes all the way up to 4 rpm before shifts and when it does it jumps sometimes it shifts lightly. I had a transmission flush and it’s still happening. All other gears work just fine and once i shift out of first gear it drives just fine. I have a automatic. But i was told i could manually shift out of first but i don’t like to drive my baby that way.

I have a 2002 Toyota camry the car start and go into first gear and change gears with no problem but when I take it over 40 mph it work find on till I stop at a light. When I start to drive it will change gear but the rpm stay high. They stay about 3000 rpm to 4000 rpm when I go faster than 50 mph. I have to stop the car and restarted for the transmission to work normal. I can’t find out the problem. I have taken it to a car shop but they can’t find out the problem.

I have a 98 automatic camry. Starts but not moving, I can feel very very little when trying to shift it to any gear (R L2D). When it is cold it moves strong like it did before but after a 100 meters you feel like it’s nottled again and stops moving.. turned it of and back on after 5 minutes again moved about 100-200 meters and nottled again (the same in reverse or forward). Any solution please let me know…
