Can I drive with a transmission problem?
If your Toyota 4Runner can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.
How often does a Toyota 4Runner transmission need to be replaced?
The overall lifespan of a Toyota 4Runner transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Toyota 4Runner transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.
How are Toyota 4Runner transmission issues diagnosed?
It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Toyota 4Runner transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.
How is a Toyota 4Runner transmission replaced?
In order to replace your Toyota 4Runner transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed.

How to Solve Toyota 4Runner Transmission Problems
Solution A: Buy a Used Toyota 4Runner Transmission
The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.
Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Toyota 4Runner Transmission
Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.
Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Toyota 4Runner Transmission
Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

2000 4runner limited 3.4l. Auto Transmission operates great in all forward gears, however in reverse at about 2500 rpm it slips into neutral. Previous owner did not disclose this issue and I found out a month later. What could be causing this? Fluid is kind of dark and was a bit low. Topped it up but saw no improvement. Should I be looking for a new or used transmission? Or hopefully just a sensor? Edit; I should add that my overdrive button on the shifter doesn’t function. I still have overdrive though, the light just doesn’t come on and I can’t turn overdrive off.
I have a 1995 Toyota 4Runner. It goes into low range and shifts as it should, in high range I having nothing.
I replaced my 95 Toyota 4 runner transmission an it drove fine till my trans cooling line broke an I lost a lot of fluid an continued to drive due to a Family emergency now my car only moves in reverse. What do I do
4runner 2006
210,000 miles
Just bought it used
When the car reaches about 40mph , When in ʻDrive’ , there is a tremor like driving over a washboard road…
Lower or higher speeds are ok
1998 4runner
Ect stopped working
driving down the freeway about 55MPH, and then the transmission stopped working. No noise, just no go. Engine still runs great, but response when in drive, or reverse.

I am having this exact problem…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9XIhSk2Cok
It is a 2003 Limited V8 with 200K miles. Also have abs lights on in the dash and the head ticking issue. Love to hear ideas on how I should address these 3 items.
Apparently the original A340h 4wd transmission was swapped out with a two wheel drive model and it wont shift to overdrive. Am I wasting my time?
Well my problem is my cluster went out all the gauges but all the lights still work on it and now my transmission won’t go into overdrive
This issue is on my 1995 Toyota 4Runner with automatic transmission. while at cruising speed (40 to 65 MPH) i notice some slight surging in RMP’s. NOT downshifting just elevated RPM’s of aprox 500. Seams as if the torque converter is locking up.
Our 2001 4 runner’s transmission was rebuilt but 25 miles later the engine light along with all the other lights lit up the dash and now its locked in 4 wheel drive.
I am very interested in a 1991 4runner. This vehicle looks well used and loved. If it wasn’t for the transmission i would say it’s perfect for me (well I prefer manual but you can’t always win). Okay so anyways he told me this.. “So you know the truck runs and drives but you can’t go to far because the trans fluid heats up. Will need a trans or At least add and additive. Still there are trans available for cheap” “It already has a huge trans cooler and lines Swap the trans takes about 3 hours/ $300” Is this pricing true and can you diagnose what the problem may be? She’s lifted and has all sorts of added features. Safari Snorkel, Roof headlights etc. 260 000KM’s $1800. What do you think? Thanks for the help! .
2005 Toyota 4 runner at first wouldn’t shift into 1st gear until about 2 1/2 – 3 rpms then would shift and drive perfect after you got out of 1st gear ran scanner on it and shift solenoid B is going out. Have the part to fix it and now driving it to where it’s going to be fixed there’s a high pitch whining noise and also C1203 code is also showing up now as well. Search what it could be and there’s seriously millions of possibilities not really sure where to start… Only have had this car for 3 months not even 😏
My 2006 Toyota 4 Runner will has been having problems for a few months now first it would only go in drive and park no reverse or neural but now it only has reverse and park??
I get a high pitch metalic gingling sound from my 2018 4runners transmission. This sound occurs when the truck is in Drive and Reverse not Park or Neutral…
This sound also occurs after the truck shifts gears from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd…it is quite annoying….
Please Advise…..
I have a 2002 Toyota 4runner who needs a new transmission. I have been quoted 4500 for a reman with labor included. My question is whether or not to sink this money into a vehicle with a kbb value right around that same price. Any advice?
2012 Toyota 4runner, shudder around 25mph-40mph, not all the time. Mostly when i am at low throttle from a stop. Hard throttle form a stop and no shudder. No codes. took out 2 quarts of fluid and replaced with new shudder stopped but came back after about 300 miles of driving.
That sounds like what I am experiencing with my 2009 4Runner Ltd. I would love to get an answer too! My symptom occurs when I slow down to about 1500rpm (as if someone is making a turn in front of me). Then when I accelerate out of the slowdown I get a shudder. It will not happen from accelerating from a full stop, such as a traffic light, or at higher speeds. I have 210k on the truck, but absolutely no problems until this. Any ideas?
Maybe U joints
I have a 2012 4 Runner and am having the exact same problem. Did you find the problem?
I have this issue. I was told today by Toyota that it is my torque converter.
I have an 05 with 210k on it with the same issue. Was told it’s the torque converter
