After fixing the broken a drum in the 5 hp 24 transmission, I’m not really a mechanic but replacement was more than the car, it ran fine in the first test drive shifting smoothly and reverse was fine. My very difficult (to me) task seem done. The second test drive it suddenly downshifted to maybe a second gear and after stoping to see what the what it wouldn’t go in to neutral or reverse, all sent it forward. Even in park it seemed to be pushing forward. There is no loud noise and the mechanical linkage directly from the shifter is doing it’s job, it is a mystery after driving perfectly the first test drive. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. The car is so nice but I can’t spend a ton on it, and I’d hate to sell it to a parts supplier for little to nothing. Thanks for any words.

I hate to ask you to do this but do you think you could pull out the drum again and look at your work. You are going to have to tear the drum down again because I think you may have misaligned something. Taking apart a drum and putting it back together, unless you are very experienced at it, requires some painstaking work as you remove the various planetary gears, various clutch pieces, the sun gear, disk pack halves and so on. All it takes is one misaligned gear (there are several that fit together) or one misaligned C-type holding ring, gear pack, disk pack or band and you can have all kinds of trouble.

Yes, it is easy to save money doing this work but now you are seeing the downside of doing-it-yourself for the first time. There’s the possibility that something has been missed or misaligned or forgotten and the result of that is performance as you described.

You can do the work yourself again — you have already done it before — but this time slow down and do each step carefully so that when everything is back together — as you know it goes together like an old box trick, one think fits inside the next and so on until you have finished — everything works correctly.

Failing that, you are looking at probably another $1,500 in labor and parts charges to have the drum repaired again.

Thank you so much for your reply. I’m doing just that. I just got through draining the transmission fluid and have her elevated with triple back up to pull her again.

I have been pursuing this at the above link with help from well wishers and experts, if you are interested. Essentially we decided that because the rear wheel will not rotate backward in any gear with the engine off that it is jammed exactly like you mention above. Thanks so much, people like you responding to help someone is ther very best thing about the web.
