I am posting this here for Jeff.

I just bought an old mitsubishi v6, but it’s been well cared for.
    The problems are:
    – From when I slow down to 35kmh or slower, and I then speed up, the transmission will clunk hard into gear. I can avoid this by hesitating before speeding up to give the transmission time to find the gear.
    – It takes longer to get into what seems to be 2nd. or 3rd. gear as I’m speeding up.
    – Also, after the car has been parked for a few hours, it hesitates for a split second before moving forward.
I had it serviced, but it has made no difference. When it was serviced, they cleaned the plugs that connect the transmission with the engine. Also, before I had it serviced, the fluid seemed to be a good pink color.
Someone suggested disconnecting the battery, so the computer resets, but a mitsubishi service person said that it would be unlikely to fix the problem.
I don’t like the idea of paying as much for a replacement transmission as I payed for the car itself.
    Thanks

My 00 Montero Sport Limited 4X4 doing exactly same thing as you described. I had tranny shop “AAamco tranny” here in Beavercreek OH rebuilt my tranny with total cost $2775.35 with 12 months or 12,000 miles gurantee parts and labor. I just took it back for 10 days inspection and so far with no leak or acting like it before. Currently it drive/shift normal. Oh before this I had pay shop flushing tranny 2x still not fixing it thats why I had spent this amount to rebuilt tranny. Hope it help on fixing pricing

Your Mitsu service guy is right. Resetting the Engine Control Unit / Transmission Control Unit probably won’t solve the problem. It sounds like you’ve got worn clutches inside the transmission. If the fluid was translucent pink before you had it changed, the previous owner likely had it serviced in an effort to fix the same problem.

One thing though, Mitsubishi automatics require a unique automatic translation fluid called Diamond SPIII, or an equivalent synthetic. If a lesser fluid is ever used, internal damage can occur because the chemical makeup of the non-approved fluid won’t be able to properly protect the moving parts from heat-related damage.
