Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Pontiac G6 can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Pontiac G6 transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Pontiac G6 transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Pontiac G6 transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Pontiac G6 transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Pontiac G6 transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Pontiac G6 transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Pontiac G6 transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

Recommendations for Pontiac G6 transmission issues?

To save time and get back on the road faster, have your 17-digit truck VIN# handy and you can get an online quote for a reman Pontiac G6 transmission here, then find a local shop using our Find a Shop guide to install it for you.

How to Solve Pontiac G6 Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Pontiac G6 Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Pontiac G6 Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Pontiac G6 Transmission

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

Is it possible to replace torque converter without completely dropping the transmission on a Pontiac G6 2006 GT

Timothy D Goodman

I have a 2007 pontiac G6 GTP and I swapped the trans for one out of a 2008 malibu. My speedometer only goes to 25 mph when I am doing 65 mph. I have no DTR or TCM codes and the trans shifts fine to all gears. I have the 3.6L and the 6t70 trans. I took to a shop and everything checked out fine except the speedo reading they could see on their scan tool that speedo said 17 mph and the scan tool said 42 mph. I still have the original trans as it only had 1st and 2nd gear and no reverse so I assume its the wave plate damage. Could it be the Tecm from the malibu not reading correct in the G6? can it be recalibrated? I am at a total loss and no one has an answer. I think there is an input and output speed sensor and no idea it that’s the issue. cruise control will work when the speedo gets to 25 mph. I even replaced the cluster and same thing.

I have P0700 for P0717 and an ISS DTC (which I replaced with brand new one). Once replaced, the DTC was actively cleared and (after the trip cycle procedure) the DTC P0717 was re-established. What’s next? Wiring harness (the outside or inside the side case) I should be examining and or replacing? If that doesn’t clear the DTC P0717, should the PCM be replaced altogether with brand new one and then programming is done? Can I myself or only the dealer? And can I replace it with a used PCM? And then reprogramming the used PCM with the recipient car’s VIN? The vehicle is driven without any noticeable transmission issue (the DTC P0717, however, is causing an emission test failure and must be resolved). I can’t think of other reasons (ISS, Harness, PCM) right?

Hello,
I have a 2006 Pontiac G6. ~135K miles. Car sometimes does not want to shift (high rpms) and can shift hard at times (currently not driving). Dealership diagnostic yielded no results. No error codes. They recommended buying a new car over rebuilding or new transmission. Does their analysis sound likely? I realize everyone will have a bias for business… Email is best! Thanks!

There is a recall on the car for the tranny cable… Buuuutttttt… they are telling me that isn’t the cause for my car not wanting to come out of 3rd. It hit’s 40 and very sluggish. But if I go down a hill, once I hit 60 it runs fine…

I have a 2006 with the 3.9 liter. Is it possible to swap the 4t65 with the 6t70 or 6t75? Is is physically the same size so it will fit? Do the bolt-holes line up?

I have a 2006 Pontiac G6 GT. I have around 124,000 miles on it. In November 2019 my Traction control light suddenly came on along with the Check Engine light, I experienced a severe lack of power when trying to accelerate. Could only get to 30mph without the RPMs going too high. Mechanic replaced the sensors and flushed the transmission and changed fluid & filter cost me $900.. Now again in April of 2020 I’m having the same exact problem & am told it’s the Valve body & this time it will be $1200.

Yes and there are lots of videos on Youtube if you go there and type “4t65e no 4th gear” by the way I also have low miles at 65k but your mileage is incredibly low!!

I just bought a 05 Pontiac G6 GT that when put in drive it shifts hard. It has started to slip when it down shifts and when it shifts from first to second it shifts hard. It has no dipstick and no fluid can be seen where you put it in. I added a quart of fluid and no change. Could it be that low. What do you recommend.

It’s the automatic transmission clutch lube pipe. For some reason 1 one the lines will break free from the mounting plate and it will cause your trans to only drive in reverse. Remove transmission pan then transmission filter and finally you’ll see the 5 metal lines. Remove the bolts holding the lines and once you get it out you’ll see which line has “broken free” by slightly pulling on each line individually. You get get a new line assembly on rockauto.com or thru ACDelco part# 24202349. Your welcome😀😀
