A transmission adaptive learning system, reads the data about the throttle position, engine speed, vehicle speed and a number of other parameters, then devises a shifting strategy that will maximize performance and efficiency. If the ECU detects an error in the system, a P2788 DTC will set.

How Serious is the Code?
A P2788 diagnostic trouble code is actually fairly serious, and can result in a number of drivability issues that include harsh shifting, delayed shifts and engine stalling. The cause of the problem may also be quite serious as well.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a P2788 include:
- Slipping
- Delayed shifts
- Harsh shifts
- Engine stalling
- Transmission overheating
Causes
- Low and/or dirty transmission fluid
- Failed pressure control solenoid
- Valve body issues
- Failed TCM
How to Diagnose the Code?
The first steps in diagnosing a P2788 OBDII code, is to check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. Next, the wiring and connectors on the transmission wiring harness will have to be carefully inspected for signs of damaged wires and corroded or broken connectors. After that, all of the shift solenoids, temperature sensors, speed sensors, torque converter solenoids and pressure control solenoids may need to be tested. Other diagnostic trouble codes may be present, and can shed light on what is causing the problem.
