Cars that have automated manual transmissions, sometimes referred to with names such as dual clutch transmissions, have little parts called gearshift actuators that operate the clutch forks. These clutch forks allow you to shift between different gears, and a P2786 DTC lets you know that the gear shift actuator has overheated.

How Serious is the Code?
A P2786 diagnostic trouble code is fairly serious, and can often result in premature clutch wear.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a P2786 include:
- Slipping
- Failed gear engagement
- Stuck in neutral
- Burning smell
- Smoke from the bell housing
- Limp Mode
Causes
- Wiring problems
- Failed gear shift actuator
- Failed TCM
How to Diagnose the Code?
The first step to diagnosing a P2786 OBDII trouble code, is to check the condition and level of transmission fluid. If it’s clean and bright, the wiring and connectors on the transmission wiring harness will need to be inspected for signs of damage or corrosion. If everything appears in good order, then the gear shift actuator and clutch plate should be checked.
