How Serious is the Code?

The P1890 diagnostic trouble code is most common Honda vehicles that are fitted with a Honda CVT transmission. The transmission problems related to this OBD2 code often present themselves at highway speeds, where the engine RPMs will increase, but the vehicle speed will not change. This is often due to a TCM programming issue. Needless to say, vehicle performance will suffer greatly.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P1890 include:

  • Acceleration issues
  • Engine RPM surges

Causes

  • TCM/PCM programming faults

How to Diagnose the Code?

An analysis of the vehicle will have to be made by a mechanic that is well-versed in Honda CVT transmissions. There was a technical service bulletin issued for newer vehicles in 2016, that recommended a PCM software update (Honda TSB 16-053). However in some cases, the transmission may need to be completely replaced. If that is the case, a good quality remanufactured Honda CVT transmission would be recommended.
