Every time you put your shift lever into gear, the gate select position sensor tells the ECU and TCM what gear you’ve selected. If there is an intermittent problem on the electrical circuit that the GSP sensor operates on, a P0908 DTC will be set.

How Serious is the Code?
The P0908 diagnostic trouble code is actually pretty serious, because if the computer doesn’t know what gear the shifter is in, it won’t know how to set the transmission shift points. The ECU may also think that the transmission is still in gear, and prevent the engine from starting when you turn the key.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a P0908 include:
- Engine does not start
- Transmission behaves erratically
- Harsh gear changes
- Transmission delays before shifting gears
- Cruise control stops working correctly
Causes
- Misalignment of the gate select position sensor
- Shift linkage out of adjustment
- Faulty gate select position sensor
How to Diagnose the Code?
If you’ve had transmission repairs performed recently and experience a P0908 OBDII trouble code, you should have a technician check the adjustment of the gate select position sensor. They should also check the adjustment of the shift linkages as well.
