Modern vehicles require number of sensor inputs to determine how the vehicle will run. If the ECU (engine computer) thinks that you may have selected the wrong gear for the driving situation (based on engine load, vehicle speed, throttle position etc.), a P0824 DTC will be triggered.

How Serious is the Code?
If your vehicle’s computer cannot determine that you have selected the correct gear for the situation, the transmission may not shift correctly, and a P0824 diagnostic trouble code will be saved.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a P0824 include:
- Abrupt shifts
- Failure to shift gears
Causes
- Damaged connectors and/or wiring
- Transmission range sensor needs adjusting
- Transmission range sensor has failed
How to Diagnose the Code?
A P0824 OBDII trouble code is often caused by electrical problems that can be traced to damaged wiring or connectors. The transmission range sensor itself may be out of adjustment if recent work has been completed on the transmission. Otherwise the sensor itself may be at fault.
