Modern vehicles use a range of sensors to tell the computer what vehicle and the driver are doing. The transmission range sensor tells the ECU which gear you have selected with the shifter. If there is a problem on the circuit this sensor operates on, a P0814 DTC will be saved.

How Serious is the Code?
A P0814 diagnostic trouble code probably won’t leave you stuck on the side of the road, but it can have an impact on the drivability of your vehicle.
Symptoms

- Harsh shifts
- Stuck in a gear
Causes
- Damaged wiring/connectors
- Failed transmission range sensor
How to Diagnose the Code?
The first thing the mechanic should do when trying to diagnose a P0814 OBDII trouble code, check the condition of the wiring and connectors on the transmission wiring harness. If everything looks good, transmission range sensor should be checked to see if it is properly adjusted. It does not need to be adjusted, sensors itself may need to be replaced.
