What Transmission Do I Have?

How Serious is the Code?

Depending on the complexity of the vehicle, a P0734 trouble code could be caused by minor or major transmission problems.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0734 include:

  • Check engine light
  • Slipping
  • Inconsistent shifting
  • Won’t shift out of 4th gear
  • Can not engage 4th gear
  • Engine stalls unexpectedly
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Poor engine performance

Causes

  • Low transmission fluid level
  • Dirty transmission fluid / filter
  • Damaged wiring/connector
  • Faulty transmission pump
  • Torque convertor clutch failure
  • Solenoid issues
  • Pressure issues
  • Valve body issue
  • TCM failure

How to Diagnose the Code?

If you are experiencing a problem with 4th gear and a P0734 OBDII trouble code has been stored, then a mechanic should analyze the rest of the ECU data, to see if the problem is caused by electronic components like a solenoid. If the problem is related to the hydraulic system (which is often caused by dirty ATF), then the valve body, pump and torque convertor will also have to be inspected.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing

Oddly enough, dirty transmission fluid can often be the cause of a P0734 DTC.

What Repairs Will Fix P0734?

  • Change transmission fluid / filter
  • Repair or replace damaged wiring and/or connectors
  • Repair or replace failed transmission or torque convertor component
