P0732: Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio DTC Trouble Code

To know which gear the transmission is suppose to be in, the ECU needs to know the engine RPM, throttle position and transmission output speed at all times. The P0732 DTC indicates the computer is having trouble figuring out how/when to shift into 2nd gear.

How Serious is the Code?

Depending on the complexity of the vehicle, a P0732 trouble code could be caused by minor or major transmission problems.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0732 include:

  • Check engine light
  • Slipping in-and-out of gear
  • Erratic shifting behavior
  • Won’t shift out of 2nd gear
  • Can not engage 2nd gear
  • Engine stalls unexpectedly
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Poor engine performance

Causes

  • Not enough transmission fluid
  • Dirty transmission fluid / filter
  • Damaged wiring/connector
  • Failed transmission pump
  • Failing torque convertor clutch
  • Solenoid failure
  • Blocked pressure passage
  • Valve body issue
  • TCM failure

How to Diagnose the Code?

Since a P0732 OBD2 fault code only indicates that there is a problem shifting 2nd gear, a mechanic should analyze the ECU data with a scan tool, to determine if there are other DTC’s that might point them to the source of the problem. Failing components like a solenoid or a torque convertor clutch will have a separate code stored in the ECU. They may also perform a torque convertor stall test to ensure that the TCC system is working properly.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing

More often than not, a P0732 diagnostic trouble code can be triggered by dirty transmission fluid, or not enough transmission fluid. Sometimes, simply servicing the transmission will allow it to begin functioning normally. This isn’t always the case, but proper maintenance can often prevent a P0732.

What Repairs Will Fix P0732?

  • Change transmission fluid / filter
  • Repair or replace damaged wiring and/or connectors
  • Repair or replace failed transmission or torque convertor components

mine was caused by a gear shift driving over very bad\bumpy roads. fyi, just clear and hit and hit the highway. if the code doesnt come back on right away, it was just a simple gear shift malfunction in the timing because you hit th a bump at that very moment. it was obvious on the highway the car was shifting into second gear (and 3rd etc) without an issue. this applies mainly to fwd vehicles. this is from my mechanic, not my 2 cents. he was 100% correct.
