P0719 – Torque Converter/Brake Switch B Circuit Low DTC Trouble Code

P0719 – Torque Converter/Brake Switch B Circuit Low DTC Trouble Code

On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the engine control unit/ECU needs to receive certain signals in order to know when it is appropriate to disengage the torque convertor lockup. One of the signals that it looks for, comes from the brake light switch, which lets the ECU know to disengage overdrive because the brakes have been applied. A P0719 diagnostic trouble code means that there is something wrong with the signal coming from the brake light switch.

What Transmission Do I Have?

How Serious is the Code?

When the transmission shifts into overdrive, the engine and the transmission are locked into a 1:1 direct drive. If the torque convertor does not disengage, the engine could stall when you come to a stop and the vehicle is in gear. Or, the transmission could be sent into Limp Mode, which would restrict it to a single forward gear.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of the P0719 DTC include:

  • Engine stalling
  • Malfunctioning brake lights
  • TCC lockup failure
  • Erratic shifting
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Reduced engine performance

Causes

  • Faulty or misadjusted brake light switch
  • Shorted or damaged wiring
  • Damaged or corroded wiring connector
  • Blown fuse or fusible link

How to Diagnose the Code?

In order to properly diagnose a P0719 OBD2 fault code, wiring and connector going into the brake light switch should be thoroughly inspected for signs of damage or a short. If nothing is found, then the brake light switch will need to be tested with the volt meter. Any applicable fuses and fusible links should also be tested.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing

When trying to diagnose a P0719 DTC, it’s not uncommon to simply replace the brake light switch instead of trying to adjust it. Also, a blown fuse may still appear to function, but fail under load.

What Repairs Will Fix P0719?

  • Replace or adjust the brake lamp switch
  • Replace brake light fuse
  • Replace fusible link
  • Replace brake light bulb(s)
  • Replace brake light socket(s)
  • Replace or repair shorted wiring or connectors
  • Reflash PCM/ECM
