The P0714 trouble code is used to alert you to either a problem with the transmission fluid temperature or the transmission fluid temperature sensor. The TFT sensor usually lives in the transmission pan, and it relays the transmission fluid temperature to the PCM (powertrain control module) by sending a return signal/voltage that correlates with the temperature. The P0714 DTC is triggered when the PCM is not receiving a normal signal from the transmission fluid temperature sensor, or the ATF temperature has reached an unacceptable level.

How Serious is the Code?
Even though there are several potential causes for a P0714 OBDII code, they all have the potential to be quite bad. If the transmission has indeed overheated, then there could be serious internal damage to the seals, bearings, clutches etc. If the problem is due to a failed transmission fluid temperature sensor, then the PCM may decide to put the transmission into Limp Mode, which only allows you to drive in a single forward gear.

How to Diagnose the Code?
In order to properly diagnose the cause of a DTC P0714, the mechanic should first see what other codes may have also been stored in the PCM. Next, check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. Dirty transmission fluid can cause problems with the TFT sensor, as well as cause the transmission to overheat. If no issues are found with the transmission fluid, then check the wiring for shorts and other damage. Check the condition of the wiring connectors as well. If no issues are found, then test the TFT sensor with a volt meter.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing
Dirty transmission fluid and wiring issues are the most commonly overlooked causes of a P0714 diagnostic trouble code.
