P0710: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit DTC Trouble Code

P0710: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit DTC Trouble Code

A transmission fluid temperature sensor is designed to allow the engine control module to monitor the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid by sending a voltage signal to the ECU that is inversely proportional to fluid temperature (i.e. the lower the voltage, the higher the temperature). A P0710 OBD2 trouble code indicates that there is either a problem with the TFT sensor, or the ATF is reaching unacceptable temperature levels.

How Serious is the Code?

The seriousness of a P0710 DTC depends upon what is causing it. If the ATF is overheating, then serious internal damage could occur. If the problem lies with a failed transmission fluid temperature sensor, then the problem may be slightly less severe. However, either problem could cause the ECU to place the transmission into limp mode, locking out all but one forward gear.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Transmission overheating
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
  • Torque convertor lockup malfunction
  • Limp Mode

Causes

Common causes of a P0710 DTC include:

  • Failed transmission fluid temperature sensor
  • Dirty transmission fluid
  • Low or leaking transmission fluid
  • A short, damage, or corrosion in the wiring or connectors

How to Diagnose the Code?

Start by checking the level and condition of the transmission fluid. If no problems are found, inspect the wiring and connectors going to the transmission fluid temperature sensor. If no issues are found, test the TFT sensor with a volt meter.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing

It is common to ignore transmission fluid leaks and condition when diagnosing a P0710 DTC.

What Repairs Will Fix P0710?

  • Replace the transmission fluid temperature sensor
  • Change the transmission fluid
  • Repair transmission fluid leaks
  • Repair a short, damage, or corrosion in the wiring or connectors
