Nissan Rogue Transmission Problems & Overview | RE0F10A CVT

The Rogue was the first compact CUV to be fitted with a CVT transmission, so it’s no surprise that 2nd gen models got a revised ‘Xtronic’ CVT with a dedicated Sport Mode. Does something seem wrong with your Rogue? Let’s look at some of the most common Nissan Rogue transmission problems, and see what you can do to get your car back on the road.

Nissan Rogue CVT Warranty Extension

To provide its customers with additional assurance regarding their overall cost of ownership, Nissan doubled the warranty period for the CVT transmission in the 2008-2010 Nissan Rogue. The existing powertrain warranty coverage of 5 years/60,000 miles was extended at no cost, for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing, up to 10 years/120,000 miles (whichever comes first).

This extension required no action on the customer’s part. The remainder of the powertrain warranty coverage for components other than the transmission remains unchanged, at 5 years/60,000 miles, and the basic warranty coverage also remains unchanged. Nissan Rogue Recalls

No transmission-related recalls.

Nissan Rogue Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)

2015 Rogue – TSB PC346
Problem – Nissan is voluntarily replacing torque converters in certain 2015 Rogue’s.
Solution – For more information, contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261. Refer to campaign id; PC346

TSB NTB13-079d – Reduced performance due to CVT fluid temperature protection logic – RE0F10A CVT transmission

*Note: These RE0F10A transmission problems apply to several vehicles. The TSB relating to that vehicle will be listed next to its name.

2007 – 2012 Nissan Altima 4cyl – TSB NTB13-079d
2007 – 2012 Nissan Sentra – TSB NTB13-095c
2008 – 2013 Nissan Rogue – TSB NTB14-002d
2014 – 2015 Nissan Rogue Select – TSB NTB12-057c

Problem – The reduced performance is due to the CVT fail-safe mode, which will reduce the vehicle speed to protect the transmission from further damage. This will happen after high RPM (4000+) and/or high-speed driving (65 mph/104.6 km/h) for 1-1.5 hours or more.

Solution – If the technician determines that the transmission has not been overfilled/the correct transmission fluid is used, and the coolant concentration is not greater than 50%, they will use the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system to determine if the conditions were present to damage the transmission. If the conditions were moderate, the RE0F10A valve body will need to be replaced, and an external CVT fluid cooler installed. If the conditions were more severe, then the transmission itself will need to be replaced.

TSB NTB09-148A – Valve body failure
2007-2008 Altima – 2007-2008 Rogue – 2007-2008 Sentra
Problem – Cars equipped with the CVT transmission may have the following trouble codes stored in the TCM: P0840. P0845, P0744, P1777
Solution – The Control Valve Assembly will have to be replaced.

Common Nissan Rogue Transmission Problems

Vehicle will not move forward when the shifter is placed in the Drive position – RE0F10A CVT transmission
Problem – After placing the vehicle in Drive, it may refuse to move as if the transmission is slipping or cannot engage forward gear.
Solution – The problem could be as simple as low CVT fluid or a failed speed sensor. However it can also be failed transmission pump or forward clutch.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?

If your Nissan Rogue can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.

How often does a Nissan Rogue transmission need to be replaced?

The overall lifespan of a Nissan Rogue transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation (including the radiator issue that plagued the Nissan RE5R05A in the Pathfinder, Armada, Titan, Frontier and Xterra), along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Nissan Rogue transmissions last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.

How are Nissan Rogue transmission issues diagnosed?

It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Nissan Rogue transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.

How is a Nissan Rogue transmission replaced?

In order to replace your Nissan Rogue transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed.

Recommendations for Nissan Rogue transmission issues?

To save time and get back on the road faster, have your 17-digit truck VIN# handy and you can get an online quote for a reman Nissan Rogue transmission here, then find a local shop using our Find a Shop guide to install it for you.

How to Solve Nissan Rogue Transmission Problems

Solution A: Buy a Used Nissan Rogue Transmission

The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.

Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Nissan Rogue Transmission

Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.

Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Nissan Rogue Transmission

Need a replacement transmission? Get an estimate for replacement transmissions and local installation. Look up your transmission model by vehicle make and model.

What Transmission Do I Have?

Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

My 2015 NISSAN ROGUE SV Transmission acts up. The revs fluctuate. They go up, while my speed remains the same. Why?

2009 Nissan AWD Rogue. Rear end collision on 12/10/21. 10 days later, waiting for Farmer’s Insurance to accept fault, the car began jerking upon acceleration; it felt kind of like I was running over something as it moved forward. By 6:00 pm that same day, after only using the car for city street errands, the car stopped all forward movement while turning into our driveway. We were stuck in the middle of both north and south bound lanes of rush hour traffic unable to move either forward or in reverse, regardless of shifting. Had to literally drag the vehicle out of the roadway with a chain attached to our tractor. Wheels locked up tight. Towed to Certified Transmission specialist who has never seen this before, but cannot verify that it is accident related. Can’t get body work estimate until we replace transmission so wheels can roll. We are second owner with meticulous maintenance records from first owner. 122K miles. Freaking mess. Ideas?

Why did they only include the first 2 years of the first gen.? They all have the same crappy CVT! Why can’t anybody make anything decent anymore? Why is everybody always “fixing” things that aren’t “broke”? Make something that works and leave it alone! Oh, that’s right, the companies wouldn’t get dirty rotten filthy stinkin’ rich if they did that now would they?

Same 2016 rogue Nissan ended replacing mine through good will case

I just purchased a new 2021 rogue SV 7 days ago and today I want to check out how the autopilot drive works and about the first 5-6 minutes after I turned the autopilot on it runs well and I was so exciting about it but then all of sudden the warning light was on and said CVT malfunction Service Now. I pulled off the freeway and stopped the engine and a few minutes later restart and the light was gone. I got on the freeway again and try the autopilot again and about 5 minutes later. It does again. I stopped again and turned off the engine and the light but then the engine check light was on and I can’t turned it off. I will call the dealer tomorrow to schedule for service but I am really nervous about it because this is a brand new car only 100 miles.

No, they’re not. I have a 2013 also and it started acting up a couple of weeks ago so I went looking for info. I didn’t even know what a CVT is before now. The only Rogues still under the extended warranty are 08′-10′ The rest ended at 7yr. 75k. Some Sentras and Ultimas are still covered in this year range but no 13′ Rogues after 7/75K This is really gonna screw me, I put all I had and my faith inti this car and I don’t have 4 grand to fix it or get another car and my job depends on me having a vehicle every day.

I’m having an issue with a 2013 Nissan rogues s with the transmission going and it’s 80,000 miles! I had no idea what I got myself into! I needed a reliable vehicle and can’t afford to brake down! Oh boy! Seems like everyone’s having problems with Nissan! Not making right will lose business all together because I will never get anything through them! Have had nothing but problems

Galvan

I have a 2016 Rogue SL and at about 30,000 miles it began acting up. It now has close to 40,000 miles. The transmission feels like a manual transmission would when you don’t shift down at low speeds. It shudders enough to be very annoying. I’m afraid it will eventually fail. I’ve taken it to the Nissan dealer but they state that if the computer doesn’t record any fault codes Nissan won’t do anything about it. I just called Nissan HQ and was promised a call back in 24 hours. We’ll see. A word to the wise, don’t buy a late model Nissan with CVT transmission.

Had similar issue my 2016 rogue was shuddering after taking three times to dealer and getting the same response. Mechanic doesn’t see or feel anything wrong, no codes are popping up we recommend thus service and that one… they ended replacing my transmission under a goodwill case. A week later we noticed oil started leaking took it to get a diagnostic they said it was the transfer case and I gave to fix it $4k

I’ve a 2014 rogue they told me at one dealership it was the transmission so I took it to another mechanic he told me the same so I took it to where I’ve all of my servicing done they said it was a drive shift so I replaced it. I still have the noise now they won’t even answer my calls. Not only did that not fix it but I was quoted 1 price and charged another so I was over charged and didn’t even need the part they replaced. Be careful cause these fools are not honest

I have a 2012 Rouge that the transmission is going out. I called corporate and was told the extended warranty given by Nissan for the transmission issues my car vin number not covered. I have the same transmission and am having the same problems. Nissan os not acting in good faith.

I am going through the SAME thing. Transmission issues on my 2012 rogue. Called Nissan and they told me I was not covered. I have 117k miles. WTF NISSAN. I’m most likely trading it in tomorrow for a Toyota. Or should I just fix it?

Thank goodness that I read these horror stories about the transmission, I’m going to listen to them as well and forget about buying the Nissan. I did on a Nissan before the Nissan cube, and I liked it it was a cute little car, but I traded it in for my BMW, which I wish I’d listen to my brother-in-law and not bought it, because it is nothing but problems!
I can’t afford to be fixing cars that’s why I got rid of my BMW, two repairs in one year were two too many! So now I have to pick a car, and my one friend has had her Toyota Land Cruiser since she bought it when it was brand new, 34 years ago, still running great, over 300,000 miles, said just get new tires every 50,000 miles and change the oil every 3000 miles. I am just amazed and the paint job is still good looking and the interior looks fine and everything is all original. So I’m going to hold out until I find an older Toyota RAV4. And I don’t care if it has 100,000 miles on it, honestly because those things go forever. Just as long it doesn’t have a salvage title, and it’s under $10,000, that’s when I’m going to buy. Money doesn’t grow on trees you know, Especially now.

Raymond Dunne

Make sure your Toyota don’t have a CVT. That’s the problem here, not the make of the vehicle. Even Toyota CVTs are problematic.Bottom line CVT = JUNK. bad idea and they’re all going in that direction unfortunately. Your friend’s 4 runner does not have a CVT.
