Getrag MT82 Transmission Overview
The result of a joint venture between Ford and German transmission supplier Getrag, the MT82 transmission has been source of frustration for both owners and the automaker since its introduction for the 2011 model year. This 6-speed manual transmission was supposed to be very smooth to operate, thanks to ball bearings and pivoting shift forks on the shift rails. There was a two piece aluminum housing to reduce driveline bending, and all of the gears were either honed or ground for quiet operation. However none of that seem to matter, because owners experienced a number of MT82 transmission problems that ranged from gear clash, to the clutch pedal getting stuck to the floor at high-speeds. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration even launched an investigation into the Ford MT82 transmission, but nothing ever came of that. Ford did update the Chinese-built MT82 transmission throughout its life, and introduced a significantly updated version of it in 2018 called the MT82-D4 transmission.
What Transmission Do I Have?
For all intents and purposes, the Ford MT82-D4 transmission (the ‘D4’ designation references the direct drive 4th gear) is an entirely redesigned 6-speed manual gearbox, with different gear ratios (5th & 6th are now overdrive gears), synchronizer rings, cone angles and gear tooth geometry (this was supposed to make gear changes easier). There was also a new dual disk clutch to increase the torque capacity (Mustang EcoBoost models do not get this type of clutch), and a dual mass flywheel.
