1993 – 2005 GM passenger cars and light duty trucks
Problem – Drivers may experience the loss of reverse, second and fourth gears. First and third gears will seem to function normally
Solution – The reaction sun gear may fail inside of the sun shell. It will need to be replaced with a stronger heat-treated 4L60E / 4L65 sun gear.
Common GMC Envoy Transmission Problems
Intermittent harsh shifting – 4L60E Transmission
Problem – A common 4L60E transmission problem is an intermittent hard 1-2 shift, often accompanied by engine bogging. This condition can be caused by the torque convertor clutch applying during the shift.
Solution – To remedy the problem, the wiring harness needs to be inspected from the transmission case connector to the rear of the engine on the driver side. It’s possible that the wires for the TCC solenoid and pressure control solenoid have become frayed on a body seam. If this is the case, the wiring will need to be repaired, and the harness repositioned.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?
If your GMC Envoy can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.
How often does a GMC Envoy transmission need to be replaced?
The overall lifespan of a GMC Envoy transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the GMC Envoy transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.
How are GMC Envoy transmission issues diagnosed?
It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your GMC Envoy transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.
How is a GMC Envoy transmission replaced?
In order to replace your GMC Envoy transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

How to Solve GMC Envoy Transmission Problems
Solution A: Buy a Used GMC Envoy Transmission
The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.
Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt GMC Envoy Transmission
Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.
Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured GMC Envoy Transmission
Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

I am driving n stop on stoplight ready to go on green light cannot go when I stop the engine for about 5 minutes then it go for 100 ft then not going again
I have an 04 envoy XUV with a 4L60E transmission. When you put it in drive it will take off like any other vehicle you get up to about 45 mph you have to let up out the gas and then push back on it and it will change into what I’m guessing is third. I’m not sure but I have read that the transmission is a 4-speed with overdrive. Now does that mean that it’s actually five speed with counting the overdrive or is that four-speed overall counting overdrive? Now I know that it has at least three gears because if you drop it from drive down to 3rd you can feel it down shift and then in the second and in the first you can feel all three of the down shifts. But if you put it and third there’s no response so I really don’t get what’s going on with it. Also you can drive with it and drive at say 3500 RPMs for about 30 to 40 minutes and then it will not be in whatever gear it was in anymore you will have to drop it into second for it to go. I changed two shift solenoids but that didn’t seem to make any difference. So I don’t know what else to do other than get a new transmission. If anyone has any suggestions on something that I might be able to fix please let me know because I really don’t have the cash right now to get another transmission. Thanks in advance for any help that someone may have.

I have 145000 miles on my 2006 GMC Envoy Denali. Lately it has a very positive shift from 1st to 2nd gear, other that that it shifts and drives beautifully, no noise to be heard, transmission was serviced fluid and filter maybe 5000 miles ago or a few years ago for me. Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated!!!
my envoy will not change into third gear it just wines i have replaced the fluid and filter, thinking that may help but it will not change to third.
I’m not sure what’s going on with my 2003 GMC Envoy….it was fine then my boyfriend tried to drive over a cement drain at a fishing spot and he hit the frame from the driver’s side right behind the front driver’s tire and right after that the SUV wouldn’t go in reverse even though it shifted into gear it wouldn’t move at all…it drives in first gear, but takes some pushing for it to change into second gear then it will hit 30-35mph…all other gears work just fine I can even put my SUV in park and it won’t roll and if I put it into neutral I can push it by hand in reverse and my break lights stopped working 7mths ago not sure if that helps I also had my catalytic converter replaced 4 months ago along with a few other things. Also the only code popping up is P1133
No codes, slowly starts to shift into second gear. Then just engages suddenly. Just did a battery and alternator test. Battery is only putting out 12.1 volts. Alternator 14.1
Going to put a new battery in. As 12.1 seems low.

Transmission shifts extremely hard engine bogging down and air conditioning works then stop
Oh my 2002 GMC envoy LX V6 engine two-wheel drive I was putting in reverse backing up a hill and it just stop going in reverse and making a spinning noise and will not shift out good when it’s going forward able to put it in third gear so I can go forward but will not go in reverse
2008 GMC 2wd envoy, transmission won’t pull in any gear, I can hear it click into reverse or any forward gear but the vehicle will not pull. So I repeatedly shift from low to reverse and vice-versa and eventually it goes into gear and pulls normally. I stop the vehicle and have to repeatedly do that process to get it to pull. Lastly if makes a clicking sound from the transmission area whenever backing up.
I am having a very similar problem. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?
I only have reverse
No reverse drives forward slowly
I only have reverse no check engine light either
