1993 – 2005 GM passenger cars and light duty trucks
Problem – Drivers may experience the loss of reverse, second and fourth gears. First and third gears will seem to function normally
Solution – The reaction sun gear may fail inside of the sun shell. It will need to be replaced with a stronger heat-treated 4L60E / 4L65 sun gear.
Common GMC Envoy Transmission Problems
Intermittent harsh shifting – 4L60E Transmission
Problem – A common 4L60E transmission problem is an intermittent hard 1-2 shift, often accompanied by engine bogging. This condition can be caused by the torque convertor clutch applying during the shift.
Solution – To remedy the problem, the wiring harness needs to be inspected from the transmission case connector to the rear of the engine on the driver side. It’s possible that the wires for the TCC solenoid and pressure control solenoid have become frayed on a body seam. If this is the case, the wiring will need to be repaired, and the harness repositioned.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?
If your GMC Envoy can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.
How often does a GMC Envoy transmission need to be replaced?
The overall lifespan of a GMC Envoy transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the GMC Envoy transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.
How are GMC Envoy transmission issues diagnosed?
It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your GMC Envoy transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.
How is a GMC Envoy transmission replaced?
In order to replace your GMC Envoy transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

How to Solve GMC Envoy Transmission Problems
Solution A: Buy a Used GMC Envoy Transmission
The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.
Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt GMC Envoy Transmission
Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.
Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured GMC Envoy Transmission
Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

Shows the transmission is shifting into gear but vehicle want move 2003 GMC envoy 2 wheel drive
I was driving my 2002 gmc envoy when in the middle of the block it popped put of gear and won’t go back into gear now a ND ot makes a grinding noise
2003 GMC envoy while driving on the interstate the transmission will just stop working. I had to to put it in 4 H to get it off the interstate. Then shut it off & turned it back on put it in 2H then drive streets all the way home
I have a 05 envoy xl and I recently had to replace the ignition switch and so I replaced the entire steering column but didn’t get the ecm that goes with that steering column. So I have been having trouble with my transmission. It shifts into reverse just fine and it has 1st and 2nd, but it slips when going into third gear and it won’t go but about 35 mph top speed without tacting the motor out on rpms. Can you tell me what is wrong please
2003 Envoy, won’t go into any gear, or reverse
Put new transmission in my 2006 GMC Envoy and won’t go anywhere.
Slips in drive and third gears
slips in dr and 3 gear
i’ve got a diagnostic and i got no codes at all back about the transmission but i’m in limp mode SOMEBODY HELP. sent it to a shop to get a new motor put in and when i got it back it’s been in limp mode ever since.
P.S. my speedometer stopped working also.
Well, at this point I believe that the 2-3 shift solenoid in the transmission is the problem since that’s pretty much the only code popping up but what it’s doing is not going into gear. When driving the vehicle, instead of shifting on its own, you have to Rev the engine to the acceptable rpm, let off the gas, and it’ll shift into the next gear and you have to repeat this until you get to the desired speed. When coming to a stop, there’s no heavy shifting, no crazy sounds, just stops like it normally would. Now I can’t recreate the symptoms because the engine won’t drive beyond 1,400 rpms. In park, Rev can get to 4k rpms no problem. In drive, however, it gets to 1,400 an then drops to 1,100 an continues. And that is the problem I’m stuck on now. No identifiable codes to tell me what the engines problem is, vacuum seems fine, fuel pressure is good, etc. We’re completely stumped on what the next step would be. It has 84k miles on it so its still young, regular maintaince, just did a full tune up 6 months ago. I’d tell ya the codes but since I erased them, I can’t get the Trans trouble codes to come back.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
2006 Envoy SLT
Has a rough shift (high rpms) at 35 & 55. The only fix I’ve found is letting off the gas or vice versa, punching it to get to the next gear. I’ve changed the t-oil & filter & the 1-2, 3-4 shift solenoids. No change in it’s behavior. 🙁
My transmission want go in drive or reverse but u can feel it changing out it just all of a sudden stop no warning
My transmission won’t go on reverse and I don’t know if the transmission is shot go to bed
There is a shutter or vibration like driving over rumble strips this is very intermittent and seems to happen less in 3 as apposed to D. However it seems to be happening more frequently the more I drive it.
During driving operation the transition to 1st gear intermittently create a shudders until the engine is turned off. Once its restarted, it typically shifts normal. The check engine light is illuminated and an assortment of faults appear — 02 Sensor, communication, etc
it revs in between 2nd and 3rd gear started after I towed a trailer after buying it with $156,000 miles on it 2004
Doesn’t accelerate passed 35 mph and u have to basically shift with the gas pedal to get it to get shifted to either 2nd or 3rd I believe.
It slips gears when hot
06envoy won’t down shift
02 envoy while driving on the highway acted like it went in neutral and that was it won’t shift
The trans between 50-60 mph seems to be shifting hard or maybe skipping you feel a stutter in gas pedal upon regular acceleration yet when you are aggressive w the take off there’s no shutter no dtc or engine light on
did you figure it out. I’m having the same issue?
My 2004 gmc envoy will only engage reverse will not engage into 1,2,3, or drive this is after a transmission filter replacement at a local garage
Transmission will not shift into any gear on my 2004 GMC envoy
