Solution – Replace the forward sprag assembly
TSB 00-07-30-022D – No reverse, second or fourth gears – 4L60E Transmission & 4L65E Transmission
1993 – 2005 GM passenger cars and light duty trucks
Problem – Drivers may experience the loss of reverse, second and fourth gears. First and third gears will seem to function normally
Solution – The reaction sun gear may fail inside of the sun shell. It will need to be replaced with a stronger heat-treated 4L60E / 4L65 sun gear.
Common GMC Envoy Transmission Problems
Intermittent harsh shifting – 4L60E Transmission
Problem – A common 4L60E transmission problem is an intermittent hard 1-2 shift, often accompanied by engine bogging. This condition can be caused by the torque convertor clutch applying during the shift.
Solution – To remedy the problem, the wiring harness needs to be inspected from the transmission case connector to the rear of the engine on the driver side. It’s possible that the wires for the TCC solenoid and pressure control solenoid have become frayed on a body seam. If this is the case, the wiring will need to be repaired, and the harness repositioned.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?
If your GMC Envoy can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.
How often does a GMC Envoy transmission need to be replaced?
The overall lifespan of a GMC Envoy transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the GMC Envoy transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.
How are GMC Envoy transmission issues diagnosed?
It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your GMC Envoy transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.
How is a GMC Envoy transmission replaced?
In order to replace your GMC Envoy transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

How to Solve GMC Envoy Transmission Problems
Solution A: Buy a Used GMC Envoy Transmission
The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.
Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt GMC Envoy Transmission
Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or rebuilt transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.
Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured GMC Envoy Transmission
Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

Will not change into overdrive
Just replaced tranny on my 05 envoy xlt electronically it registers park and neutral but no other gear also reverse lights stop working.
My 2004 envoy goes in reverse and act like it doesn’t want to move but be to I am on a incline so it moves into the street and then just stops and then I put it in drive and pulled back into the driveway
I have a 2006 gmc envoy Denali 5.3 and It is randomly hard shifting. I have 230,000 on the engine but replaced the tranny 3 years ago. I’m not sure at what mileage though.
Bought w 260000 miles. Changed fluid/filter. No slipping, noises or nothing. Ran smooth. After a few months between 2 n 3rd would take a split second longer to shift. Ran like tht for a month. One morning pulling out went through gears only this time when I got to 3rd, nothing. And then it wouldn t go in drive or reverse or anything. No pull whtso ever. Fluid level norm, not unusually burnt. Still alot of discoloration for just being changed. Pulled the pan lots of metal. Big pieces. Put lucas tranny slip in w the old fluid but filtered out fluid and this thing ran and shifted nicely.!!! Then after 10 days or so I lost 3rd but still can drive 1,2,r, lol. Weird thing is only codes I’m getting is thermostat overheat. Not one tranny code. Word of wisdom, not all 4l60e interchange. Buddy had a 04 or 05 gmc sonoma. 4l60e. But he had the 5 cylinder and I had the 4.2 inline. Would bolt up and everything b>t the shop saved me the trouble. Electronics differ so it won’t work. Bummer, I had 150 in it!! Looking like 1600 plus now, plus 500 labor.
Slipped out of gear on me on the highway now I have no heard at all but engine is fine. I can turn the drive shaft by hand also. Shift cable has been replaced as well
After jump starting another vehicle, no reverse, bo 2nd, 3rd, or 4th only 1st gear and the instrument panel doesn’t works sometimes. No codes when scanned with my pocket scanned
2005 gmc envoy with236000 when I put it in 4low it bkinks
Won’t go in gear
2010 envoy transmission shifts good sometimes when not can shut off work again just started this
Driving down yhe road my car just went into neutral. Every gear is in neutral. It holds in park but doesnt move in any other gear. It is not leaking transmission fluid. It was not slipping. There was mo signs of a tdansmission problems at all. Its a 2004 gmc envoy.
Check the solinoids, fuses, etc. Sounds like you might be lucky
Vehicle will not move forward or reverse when shifted into gear has hi lo 4 &2 and awd linkage had come undone and put back now won’t go
I have a 2006 GMC Envoy slt 2 wd 1GKDS13S462354720 and sometimes in reverse it don’t move but sometimes in reverse it backs up a little then stops like the brakes was pressed put it in park then back in reverse and it works fine. And sometimes in reverse it pulls hard so you have to break hard to slowdown and then the motor bogs down so if you don’t shift out of gear it is going to cut off on you. Forward does the same but not often as reverse pulling hard and you have to break hard and it bogs down but otherwise works great. Sometimes the service stability track light comes on with no other problems.
My Transmission redlines in first until I let off then it catches second then drives normally and when I floor it downshift to pass cars it reclines 2006 gmc envoy denali
Unit sounds like its shifting into gear but will not move in any gear
Had a used transmission put in. Done good for about 30 to 40 days. Driven home and it was like putting car in neutral coming up a hill. Coasted to stop. Had no movement in any gear not even reverse. Check bolts in torque converter. Bolts still in.
Someone is trying to give me a 2004 GMC Envoy with a bad transmission to cover $500 owed. Am I getting a bad deal? I don’t want to get stuck with a lemon plus the check engine light is on. Please help me out. Thank you
I start my 2004 envoy up and put in drive it takes sec to take gear but if I switch back to 3rd down to first its like it will not pull i can shut it off and restart put it into gear it will pull till it starts to shift and then its like its went back to neutral i again shut eng off and restart after reset and it will go into gear
My shift linkage Came apart , 2003 GMC Envoy, while on the freeway. I noticed my rpms racing. I babied it to the exit and a gas station. I crawled under and shifted into drive and got back on road but it kicked back out of gear. So I had it towed home. Any suspicions on what it might be
My 2004 Envoy is intermittently slipping out of 4th while driving between 55-70 mph. Shift solenoids are good. Did filter and fluid change with no luck. Any ideas?
2004 GMC Envoy shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd. Shifts fine if you leave off the gas.
