Chevy Traverse Transmission Recalls
Recall 09V073000 / 09041 Transmission shift cable clip failure
2009 Buick Enclave, 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2009 Chevrolet HHR, 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, 2009 GMC Acadia, 2009 Pontiac G5, 2009 Pontiac G6, 2009 Saturn Aura, 2009 Saturn Outlook
Summary –
On 276,729 2009 GM vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may come loose, causing the gear indicator to display the wrong gear.
Consequence –
If this problem occurs, the driver could remove the ignition key and exit the vehicle thinking the transmission is in Park, even though it isn’t. This can lead to a rollaway, which can cause injury and/or property damage. A lesser consequence would be the inability to start the vehicle because the transmission is not in Park.
Remedy –
This recall began on March 24, 2009, and Chevrolet dealers were instructed to inspect and if necessary, replace the shift adjustment cable clip. Concerned owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236

Problem – On vehicles equipped with the 3.6L V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission, drivers may experience no reverse, slipping, and/or harsh shifting between 3rd-5th gears. They may also have diagnostic trouble codes P0776 and P0842. This condition is typically caused by a broken 35R clutch wave plate.
Solution – During the repair/rebuild process, the wave plate must be installed properly (with the rounded edge of the internal splines facing the 35R piston), in order to prevent premature failure.
TSB 13120A – Torque converter clutch sticking – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2013 Buick Enclave – 2013 Cadillac SRX – 2013 Cadillac XTS – 2013 Chevrolet Malibu – 2013 Chevrolet Traverse – 2013 GMC Acadia – 2013 GMC Terrain
Problem – The torque converter clutch solenoid can stick due to debris in the transmission. When the vehicle is at the end of a coast-down, as the vehicle is coming to a stop, a stuck solenoid will fail to release the torque converter clutch. This keeps the engine directly connected to the driven wheels. As the vehicle stops, the engine speed will be pulled down below normal idle speed and the engine may stall. The vehicle can be immediately restarted and driven.
Solution – The valve control solenoid should be replaced, and the transmission control module will have to be reprogrammed in order to correct the problem.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?
If your Chevy Traverse can still make it up and down the road, you might say “It’s fine, I’ll just drive it until I can get it fixed”. But that is not always a good idea, depending on the symptoms. You see, there are a lot of (very expensive) moving parts inside of a transmission, and if something isn’t right, continuing to drive with a transmission problem could damage something else.
How often does a Chevy Traverse transmission need to be replaced?
The overall lifespan of a Chevy Traverse transmission largely depends on how well it was maintained. Factory design flaws also factor into this equation, along with how/how hard you drive. But on average, we’ve seen the Chevy Traverse transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been addressed and the vehicle has been maintained.
How are Chevy Traverse transmission issues diagnosed?
It is fairly easy to guesstimate what the root cause of your Chevy Traverse transmission problems might be, but you won’t truly know unless you have the right tools and experience. A good mechanic or transmission repair center will be able to connect your truck to a computer and find out which diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) have been stored. Once they know what to look for, they can perform a visual inspection to verify the problem.
How is a Chevy Traverse transmission replaced?
In order to replace your Chevy Traverse transmission, the truck has to be lifted from the ground in order to gain access to all of the parts that will need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6L80, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.

How to Solve Chevy Traverse Transmission Problems
Solution A: Buy a Used Chevy Traverse Transmission
The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used transmission or used transmission. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.
Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Chevy Traverse Transmission
Another option would be a rebuilt transmission or transmission rebuild. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.
Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Chevy Traverse Transmission
Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a remanufactured transmission.

I recently bought a used 09 Chevy Traverse. The guy said it had to warm up before shifting into drive. If not it wouldn’t move. I thought it could’ve been a security thing. I test drove it and it shifted great and drove great. I drove it a few times after buying it and always let it warm up. Now it will not go into drive at all. The reverse works fine.
Same, vibrates/slips when accelerating at around 30 mph for my 2015 LT at 113k miles. Was hoping the trans would last longer than that around the average 150k. My 1999 Sienna still runs great with its original trans at 200k. Chevy quality has improved a lot and I am happy with my Traverse, but Toyota continually improves and Chevy is going to have to leapfrog to catch up.
Shakes when it shifts into third gear. 2013 traverse
Its has 94,000 its shudders around 55mph. I’ve had engine mount front and engine torque strut mount replaced
Shudders at 55-60. It has about 94,00 miles
2015 Chevy Traverse XLT. Vehicle began vibrating and gears slipping at 25-30mph and on slight incline. I took it to the dealership and was told the wave plate was broken and required a new transmission. 113K miles.
Some time don’t shift in gears usually when cold and low speed but not often. And no code but drive normal most the time . 2010 LTZ 3.6 FWD
The transmission slips between 3 & 4 gears. It also skips when I’m driving.
Goes forward and reverses but won’t shift out going down the road
Goes in drive but has no reverse
2016 traverse
trans hangs up on 1-2 shift
After replacing the wave plate and putting in a new drum when putting it back together it will go barely backwards and it won’t go forward
My 2010 chevy traverses shifts into low without touching the shifter usually accelerating at about 35 MPR, intermittent but more frequent lately. Can I use the plus / minus on the shifter to get out of low and bring the rpms back down without hurt the transmission? Any suggestions greatly appreciated, I did have the trans fluid check and said it was fine.
I have the same problem
We have a 2011 Chevy Traverse and having timing chain issues !not very happy when I read about all the transmission problems with the Traverses ! And that these vehicles are not safe ! We were just told by the service department there are not alot of problems with the transmission in the Traverses obviously not true !after reading on them ! Will certainly not buy another !
I have a 2016 Chevy Traverse when taking off rapidly or to accelerate up a steep hill it’s shuttering real bad like running over a washboard Road what could be the problem
Mine2018 does the same
My 2015 Traverse 2LT would shudder slightly at around 20-35 mph when letting of the gas. Seems like it would do it in between gear shifts. It only did it intermittently and only for 3 seconds (About 6 shudders total) Sitting at dealer now. They said the Torque Converter is causing the issue. Replacing it tomorrow. Hopefully that fixes it, otherwise… I’ll be back here looking for an answer. lol
Sounds like what mine is doing. Did this fix your problem?
My 2009 Saturn Aura XR has problems reversing and engine makes humming sounds. My car can still run normally but what should I do? My friends suggest I should just get a new car. I hope that it’s just a minor problem like the solenoid or wave plate. What should I do?
I I bought a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse drive it about 2 months oil change they told us that we did not have no drive shaft what would be the problem with no driveshaft in my vehicle it is breaking my catalytic converter
Just changed all 3 of my cats parts alone ran me about $1,700. Hoping mine last another year then I’m buying something new
My 2011 Chevy Traverse LT has a transmission problem that happens only when I stomp on the accelerator to get into passing gear and then the engine revs and the transmission slips until I back off the accelerator and push it down normally. It seems to happen more when on an inclined highway on-ramp when I am attempting to get up to sped to properly merge into highway traffic.
We have a 2013 traverse and ours is doing the same. Was checking to see if there was a recall. My sister has the same car as mine and hers is doing the same.
I have a 2014 doing the exact same thing the shuttering when trying to accelerate and going up hills. And it seems to be worse if the road is wet from rain
Hi David,
I have a 2010 Traverse and have the same issue. The tranny only has 108k miles on it. You would think there would be a recall due to it being a safety issue.
Same issue for me. 2015 Chevy Traverse LT with 83k miles. I had someone look at it and no codes came up as issues and it would not replicate when driving. But we live in CO and it has a lot of trouble when we’re driving on even small inclines, not to mention when actually driving into the mountains.
I. Havea2012 traverse when I go up a hill it shifts rough in third gear it also clunky when shifting .you would think their be a recall on this
My engine need to be replaced I have a 2012 Traverse.
I have a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse. The car is experiencing slippage or shuddering when shifting into the 3rd gear. We have about 104,000 miles on it. Estimated repair cost has ranged from 2200 to 4000 dollars.
Mine is a 2016 doing the same thing with 73,000 miles on it !! It’s not throwing codes yet . Just domt want to be stranded
If i pull my gear handle an it wasnt started can i broke it now it hard to move
