Built on the GM Lambda platform, the Buick Enclave is a midsize crossover that offers 3 rows of seating in a premium package. The first generation 2008-2017 Buick Enclave used the 6T75E 6-speed automatic transmission, and the second gen Enclave got a new 9-speed 9T65 transmission starting in the 2018 model year. These are generally reliable gearboxes, but Buick Enclave transmission problems do happen, so let’s figure out what you can do about them.

Buick Enclave Transmission Recalls
2014 Buick Enclave Recall 14V092000 / 14048
Summary – According to the recall, the Buick Enclave transmission shift lever may become detached from the transmission shift cable adjuster. If this happens, the transmission shifter won’t work properly, and the gear indicator won’t be able to display the gear that’s actually selected.
Consequence – Should the shifter become detached while the truck is being driven, the driver won’t be able to select Park, even though the shifter is in the correct position. This can lead to an unintended rollaway, resulting in serious property damage and/or injury.
Remedy – This recall began on April 10, 2014, and Buick dealers were instructed to inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. Owners can contact Buick at 1-866-694-6546, referring to recall # 14048. Or they can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236
2009 Buick Enclave Recall 09V073000 / 09041
Summary – On some 2009 Buick Enclave’s, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may come loose, causing the gear indicator to display the wrong gear.
Consequence – If this problem occurs, the driver could remove the ignition key and exit the vehicle thinking the transmission is in Park, even though it isn’t. This can lead to a rollaway, which can cause injury and/or property damage. A lesser consequence would be the inability to start the vehicle because the transmission is not in Park.
Remedy – This recall began on March 24, 2009, and Buick dealers were instructed to inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjustment clips, free of charge. Owners can contact Buick at 1-866-694-6546, referring to recall # 09041. Or they can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236
Buick Enclave Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)
TSB PI4075 – 6T75 transmission overheating
2008 – 2012 Buick Enclave
Problem – The 6T75 transmission could experience an overtemperature situation, even if it’s not warranted by the driving conditions. This issue will be accompanied by a warning message in the drivers information center (if so equipped) and one or both of the following DTC’s: P0218 and/or P0634.
Solution – If a mechanical issue is not determined to be at fault, then it’s possible that the problem is caused by too much transmission fluid, dirty transmission fluid or restrictions in the transmission cooler circuit. Click the above link to learn more about this TSB.
TSB 09-04-21-004B – Fluid leaking from the transmission or transfer case
2008 – 2012 Buick Enclave
Problem – A fluid leak is possible from either the transmission case to transfer case interface, or the transfer case left hand weep hole.
Solution – For a leak coming from the transfer case to transmission case interface, a new transfer case O ring seal will be needed. For a leak coming from the transfer case left side weep hole, a new transfer case input shaft seal and transfer case O ring seal will be needed. To learn more about this TSB, click the link above.
TSB 07-07-30-019 – Check engine light on with poor vehicle performance – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2008 Buick Enclave – 2007 GMC Acadia – 2007 Pontiac G6 – 2007 Saturn Aura – 2007 Saturn Outlook
Problem – Drivers may experience poor engine/transmission performance, along with the following transmission diagnostic trouble codes: P0716, P0717, P0722, P0723, P0751, P0756, P0776, P0796, P2714, P2723
Solution – These transmission problems may be caused by a failed speed sensor
TSB 13120A – 2013 Buick Enclave
Problem – The torque converter clutch solenoid can stick due to debris in the transmission. When the vehicle is at the end of a coast-down, as the vehicle is coming to a stop, a stuck solenoid will fail to release the torque converter clutch. This keeps the engine directly connected to the driven wheels. As the vehicle stops, the engine speed will be pulled down below normal idle speed and the engine may stall. The vehicle can be immediately restarted and driven.
Solution – The valve control solenoid should be replaced, and the transmission control module will have to be reprogrammed in order to correct the problem.
TSB 09-07-30-012B – 2008-2009 Buick Enclave
Problem – Owners may experience a Check Engine/SES light along with no reverse and/or a slip / flare or harsh shifts in 3rd and/or 5th gear. This condition may be caused by a broken 3-5-R clutch wave plate, allowing the apply piston to over- stroke, causing the piston to leak and causing loss of gear application. This normally will not occur before approximately 32,000 km (20,000 mi). Debris generated by the condition can affect the operation of the speed sensors and other clutches.
Solution – A new 35R clutch wave plate will need to be installed.
PIP4627A – 35R clutch wave plate broken – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2007 – 2009 Saturn Aura – 2007 – 2009 Saturn Outlook – 2008 – 2009 Saturn Vue – 2007 – 2009 GMC Acadia – 2007 – 2009 Pontiac G5 – 2008 – 2009 Pontiac Torrent – 2008 – 2009 Buick Enclave – 2008 – 2009 Chevrolet Equinox – 2008 – 2009 Chevrolet Malibu – 2009 Chevrolet Traverse
Problem – On vehicles equipped with the 3.6L V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission, drivers may experience no reverse, slipping, and/or harsh shifting between 3rd-5th gears. They may also have diagnostic trouble codes P0776 and P0842. This condition is typically caused by a broken 35R clutch wave plate.
Solution – During the repair/rebuild process, the wave plate must be installed properly (with the rounded edge of the internal splines facing the 35R piston), in order to prevent premature failure.
TSB 13120A – Torque converter clutch sticking – 6T70 Transmission | 6T75 Transmission
2013 Buick Enclave – 2013 Cadillac SRX – 2013 Cadillac XTS – 2013 Chevrolet Malibu – 2013 Chevrolet Traverse – 2013 GMC Acadia – 2013 GMC Terrain
Common Problems with the Buick Enclave Transmission
Related to DTC P0741 – 2008-2010 Buick Enclave
Problem – If after rebuilding a 6T75E, the TCC remains stuck in the ‘off’ position, the problem may be due to using the incorrect control valve channel upper plate.
Solution – Install a revised control valve channel upper plate with slot (GM part #24226373).
Input/Output Speed Sensor Issues – 6T70E Transmission
Problem – When repairing a failed input speed sensor or output speed sensor, steering system damage could occur.

Can I drive with a transmission problem?
Depending on the symptoms, simple Buick Enclave transmission problems can easily morph into an expensive disaster. So it’s best to get gearbox issues properly diagnosed, before have a chance to get out of hand.
How often does a Buick Enclave transmission need to be replaced?
Maintenance and driving style have a huge affect on how long the average Buick Enclave 6T75 transmission will last. But factory design flaws play a part too. On average, we’ve seen the Buick Enclave transmission last for between 130,000-180,000 miles. A high quality replacement transmission however, can last considerably longer if all of the factory design flaws have been properly addressed.
How are Buick Enclave transmission issues diagnosed?
Guessing what a transmission problem might be caused by is pretty easy. But figuring out what the problem actually is, takes lots of experience and tools. Most mechanics can pull diagnostic trouble codes from the Buick’s computer in a matter of minutes. That way they’ll know what to look for to verify the problem.
How is a Buick Enclave transmission replaced?
To replace a Buick Enclave transmission, it has to be lifted off the ground in order to gain access to all of the transmission parts that have to be unbolted. The engine may also need to be unbolted. Then the transmission can be lowered to the ground (typically with a transmission jack), so the new transmission can be installed. Once it is in place, for the 6T75E, the vehicle PCM will have to be reprogrammed / reflashed to accept the new transmission using the latest GM subscription.
Recommendations for Buick Enclave transmission issues?

How to Solve Buick Enclave Transmission Problems
Solution A: Buy a Used Buick Enclave Transmission
The quickest way to fix your transmission problems is to simply buy a used 6T75E transmission and have it installed. These can be found at most junk yards, and they often come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there’s no way to determine the actual condition of the internal components, so you could be spending a bunch of money to have the exact same problems. Plus, that warranty only covers the transmission if it’s defective, not the labor costs that you’ll have to pay.
Solution B: Buy a Rebuilt Buick Enclave Transmission
Another option would be a rebuilt 6T75E transmission. A local repair shop will remove your transmission, then install a bunch of new parts during the rebuild. The problem here is, the skills and experience of each transmission rebuilder will vary widely from shop to shop, so you could have problems from something that wasn’t adjusted properly. And the 1-2 year warranty might only cover you at certain transmission repair shops, in a specific geographical area.
Solution C: Buy a Remanufactured Buick Enclave Transmission
Many owners depend on their vehicle to commute and get things done. Their gasoline engines are designed to go 100’s of thousands of miles, so it makes sense to invest in a quality remanufactured 6T75E transmission. You’ll get a much longer service life, and the warranty will cover any necessary transmission repairs.

2016 will not go in reverse it say check the surround
Randomly, cold start or something as simple as stopping at a traffic light, transmission won’t shift out of 1st. Have to stop put it in park and then put it back and drive. Usually this takes care of the problem sometimes I have to do it twice. Is this a transmission problem or a computer problem?
i think its transmisson related somy08 buick enclave awd 6speed auto trans i have had some slipping but today i drove to corner store and when i got back in it and put in reverse it wouldnt go i proceeded to accelerate and it was like it was locked up loud grinding clunkn proceeded giving gas and drove right out of it .proceeded down ally way and all of a sudden locks up screaching and grinding put in park and back to drive and got it home .i am mechanic to some extent w.as thinking it was something to do with like the driveline awd sounded to me kinda like it was gears maybe coming from the driveline when i would press on gas .thank you for any help
Hi my 2008 enclave just lost all transmission fluid pulling into a parking space no warning no lights on dash still no clue as to what happened
This just happened to me. Waiting on tow truck. Did you ever figure out what the cause was
The trans cooler busted in side the radiator and filled the transmission up with water and antifreeze made a strawberry milk or a chocolate milk look. It will shift to 2 ND and no more . Flushed trans put a external trans cooler on . Replaced the valve body . Any one have the same problem?
2008 enclave with 150000 miles. Had trans rebuilt and at 45 to 50 mph while cruising, it will constantly shift gears up and down. This is on a flat road with no hills and no codes show up
Maybe someone can help me with what’s going on here because I’m super upset n stressed the f out about this… I’m a single mom and absolutely cannot afford what I’ve been told I have to pay to get my new car fixed. This is bullshit. If anyone can give me any idea of what the problem might be.. what options I have on how to go about getting it fixed.. spending the least amount of money as possible. Or even if you have an idea of what this should cost me to get fixed on the low end and then on the high end… so I can at least have an idea of what I’m looking at here and not get ripped off… that would be extremely appreciated. I have a hard time trusting the mechanics around here.. I’ve had bad experiences with them before.
I know it’s the transmission.. but do I need to replace the whole transmission?
i just bought a used 2009 Buick enclave with around 175.000km on it. The transmission was going in my previous vehicle so I needed something fast and found this one and it looked like a great deal.
I’ve had this one now for about a month.. probably even less than that. And it was working perfectly fine for the first 2 weeks or so but has slowly been doing some weird shit that’s not normal
Showing signs of a transmission problem. It’s fine when it’s been sitting for a while and then u start and put it in gear and drive it… but after you have been driving for a while .. if you pull up to a stop sign or red light and slow down or stop… it wont let you go forward when u push the gas again. Like at all.. it’s like it shifted itself out of drive and into neutral on it’s own.. so I’m either stuck there and can’t move until I turn it off n back on n try again like 5 times.. and even then im lucky if it will go into drive again..
It says it’s in drive.. but u cant go forward or anything and your basically stuck there until you can get it to catch. When it does u push the gas a bit and it revs up a bit and then will jump into drive.. it wont catch into gear right away and sometimes not at all. But the worst problem now is that if ive been driving for a while like 20 mins to an hour or so..if I stop to get gas or whatever ill Shut it off. N come back 5 min later to try to leave it will not go into Drive gear. The shift says it’s in D but it will not move no matter what u try so basically once your driving you can only make one stop cause once your stopped your gonna stay there for at least 45 min to 2 hours before it will work again.
The only way I have been able to get it into Drive again is if you leave the vehicle where it is. N park.. Shut off.. and leave it alone for at least an hour and then when you try it after an hour it usually works.. if not then wait longer..
This is the worst possible thing that could have happened cause i couldnt afford a new vehicle to begin with… and now I’m being told the one I just bought needs a new transmission. And that the cheapest way is to take mine out fix it and put it back in for around 4 grand. Or get a new one for anywhere from 5 to 7 grand.
I really can’t afford that.. the guy I bought it from def wont let me take it back.. so I’mpretty much fucked right now.
Any suggestions?
I have a 2008 buick enclave when you start out {0 to 40} it chatteries after 40mph no problem there are no code or lights coming on noone seems to be able to tell me what to look for. Other then that it works great . I have 170 thousand miles on it
May be the converters I could go forward or back had the first one fixed this car gas three and it worked. Also look into the recalls for this car it may have never been fixed
Look into the recalls it’s probably never been fixed
My 2010 enclave has an electrical problem. Every two or three weeks the car goes dead. Haven’t found the problem yet. Replaced the battery but still does it.
Check your alternator and battery/alternator/starter connections. Power drain problems normally solved by these.
I have 2008 enclave had transmission rebuild put back in. Keeps throwing codes p0016 p0017 p0018 p0019 I replaced crankshaft sensor and throttle body replaced.traction control light and traction stability light keeps coming on.the timing chInand gears r et placed 51,000 miles ago need help thank you!
2010 enclave
has anyone had a problem with the high low switch on the side of shifter knob not working ?
2012 Buic Enclave. 135,306 miles on it. I had New struts and engine mounts and tires.
Feels like studder/rumbling feeling (like going over low tracks, it continues to accelerate smoothly with no sound), while that happens on tachometer/idle seems to dip a little.
Speed doesn’t matter nor incline.
A few times it seemed a little stiff to shift to Reverse.
Clutch plates sticking is my prob maybe yours too, changed fluid and added an additive per advice from dealership trans mechanic. Still no results but found that if I accelerate some what more powerfully there is no shudders. This is my second trans on a 2008 with 20010mi
Sounds like a torque converter going out.
Had a 2010 enclave that wouldn’t shift out of 2nd gear. After stopping car and turning off the ignition, the transmission shifted properly. was told by GM dealer that trans. was slipping in 2nd gear and I needed a new transmission. Estimate was from $5500-$6100. The car has 122,000 miles on it.
No codes. Feels like engine is missing which causes a studder feeling. Shop checked found no codes recorded. They advise a code will eventually occur and suggest replacing transmission. Mileage 165,000.
I have the same issue with my 2013 Enclave. 70,000 miles. No codes. It’s been happening for 6 months, and the mechanic said to just wait until I have a code.
I have the same issue on my 2013 Enclave,82,000 mikes with no codes no lights. Brought it to the dealer, they said it was a bad torque convert . Did you ever go further with your issue?
Thanks!
Our 2013 had the torque converter replaaced at 19,000 miles and now it is shuddering again. We replaced the transmission fluid, and we still are having the shudder. We are thinking of just replacing the torque converter, not the whole transmission. What are your suggestions?
Was wondering what kind of warranty the replacement had on it?
Mine does what most have done on this thread… 2nd gear goes up to high rpm with no shift … but stopping and placing in park resolves issue. Has been happening for 6 months but no codes. Did you have these symptoms “before” the studders? I’ve read that the result could be bad wave plate requiring a rebuilt transmission NOT a new one. That would reduce cost to ~ 3K instead of 6K. I am nervously waiting for it to throw a code. Mileage 201000.
Derrick, any answers yet? exactly how my wife describes happening to our 2010. I drove it several times trying to make it do it as she described, nothing! Mines at the dealership right now, I’m awaiting news.
Did anyone ever get a code or do anything to fix the problem? Mine has been shuttering for 2 years around 25mph, 40 mph and sometimes around 70. Doesn’t do it as much if at all with a faster take of speed.
same symptoms.. Never got a code. Repair shop replaced one motor mount and put in additive for stuttering.
I got a cod if PDFFF and want to know what the code means
You can go to an auto zone they will check your code and tell you what it means for free
My transmission indicate pull over and let car idle , what causes this
2009 Enclave under 90,600 miles. Experiencing stutter vibration. Dealership advises torque converter replacement and transmission fluid service for $2,760. Getting addl quotes.
Same here with 114,000 miles
Getting a rebuild at independent shop $2,400
I have the same problem above with my 2010 Enclave where it randomly doesn’t shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, revving up to 5 rpm. My car has 111,000 miles. This problem has occurred since I purchased the pre-owned car in 2014. It’s happening more frequently now. The problem goes away if I stop & restart the vehicle, and even if I just put it in Park. I did get a code from the dealership finally – P0989. They contend it’s not a wave plate issue. They said I could either throw a lot of money at it trying to figure out the problem, or buy a new car. Urg! I have not had anyone look at the transmission yet as I’m trying to decide what to do.
One thought is to have the transmission rebuilt now before more damage is done, hoping to be less expensive. Or do I just wait until the transmission goes out?
Replace the wave plate only
What did you end up doing? I have the same symptoms and model. Plan on rebuild once I get a code.
Did you ever get a solution to the rpm jumps/slipping
Hi i am Ivan johnson,i am in Ohio i have a 2012 Buick enclave 2wd 6T75E with aprox 50,000 miles, NO DTC CODES,i tow a boat that weighs about 32,000 lbs about two times a year and from the marina to the ramp and back 3 times a month, recently i started felling a sloppy first gear shift like a bad u joint,so i changed my cv half shafts which i had a bad R shaft with a hole in the inner boot and grease coming out and the joint was loose, that did help but it still feels loose as if it is hesitates to shift but it shift’s find true all of the other gears,i get a vibration around 70-80 mph,i know that could be a tire, wheel, bearing.I have been a shade tree mechanic most of my life and i am now 66 years old,but this is hard to figure out,i thought i would pick your brain,do you think this could be a tourc converter,or in the valve body,or just in the need of an update?
Hello,
I have a 2010 Buick Enclave with 128,000. Over the past 5000 miles I’ve had 5-6 times where the vehicle doesn’t want to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Revs high until i stop and and restart.
I have had no reverse issues. No obd codes. Timing chain replaced last year. Read a lot on wave plate problems. Does it sound like a wave plate issue and should i just have the wave plates replaced? What costs should i expect? With no codes and the dealership most likely unable to reproduce the issue, is there enough evidence to get the issue fixed before major transmission problems arise? could this already be a major transmission issue?
Ever figure it out? just bought a used one and the wife says this happens many times. only once for me.
