Designed specifically for Cummins 6.7L diesel powered like the Dodge Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs. As well as medium duty tilt-cab trucks like the Isuzu NPR and Mitsubishi Fuso, the AS68RC transmission is a 6 speed automatic transmission made in Japan by a company named Aisin Seiki. It’s a fairly sophisticated heavy duty truck transmission, and the AS68RC TCM has adaptive learning software that interfaces with the ECU, so that it can automatically adjust the idle speed and engine power to optimize shifting performance.

AS68RC Transmission: What’s in a name?
The AS68RC transmission was built by Aisin Transmission, and it’s called the A465 transmission when not installed in a 2007–2013 Dodge. It’s also known as the Aisin Seiki TR80. In Dodge guise, the AS68RC name stands for the following:
AS – Aisin-Seiki
6 – 6 forward gears
8 – A relative measure of the torque capacity on a scale of 0-9
R – Rear wheel drive
C – Commercial

AS68RC Transmission: The basics
The AS68RC has three driving clutches, two brake clutches, a one-way sprag clutch, and three planetary gear assemblies. From 2nd-6th gear, the AS68RC transmission performs clutch to clutch gear changes and allows for engine braking. However, first gear is applied from a stop by the one-way sprag clutch. To achieve engine breaking while in first gear, the transmission selector will have to be placed in manual 1, where the B2 brake will apply to stop the one-way sprag clutch from freewheeling.
AS68RC Tow/Haul Mode
To maximize towing capability and engine braking, the AS68RC tow haul mode locks out 6th gear, then quickens closed throttle downshifts for improved speed reduction. Shifts into 5th are still allowed in the vehicle maintains a steady speed. To activate this function, press the button at the end of the shift lever one time.
AS68RC Overdrive Off Mode
The AS68RC O/D Off function locks out both 5th and 6th gears, and can be activated by pressing the button at the end of the shift lever twice. The transmission will revert to normal 6 speed operation the next time the engine is started.

AS68RC Recalls
Recall 13V-344 / N50 – AS68RC transmission snap ring recall
2012 Ram 3500 cab chassis
2012 Ram 4500/5500 cab chassis
Summary – According to the recall, the forward primary clutch drum snap ring groove on the Aisin Seiki AS68RC 6-speed automatic transmission may not have been incorrectly machined. As a result, the snap ring itself could be ejected from the groove
Consequence – If this happens, the forward primary clutch may not be able to engage gears if the snap ring is ejected. This can result in a sudden loss of power, which could lead to an accident in certain conditions.
Remedy – According to the recall, just 85 trucks were affected, and Chrysler was supposed to replace the transmissions in those trucks. However, concerned owners can contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. You can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236
AS68RC Transmission Problems
AS68RC Temperature sensor problems
Problem – If the AS68RC TCM is registering an overheat signal, it may fully apply the torque converter clutch/TCC at just above 1200 RPM and disable the PTO. If the AS68RC transmission controller sees a cold signal, it will lock out 5th gear, 6th gear, and the TCC function.
Solution – Occasionally, the right DTC will not be stored, so a mechanic will have to determine if there is a temperature issue with the transmission, or if one or both of the AS68RC TFT sensors has gone bad.
AS68RC Torque Converter Problems
Problem – Due to a design flaw with the AS68RC torque converter stator shaft, it can actually reverse direction, causing the converter to overheat. This can also damage the lubrication system to the AS68RC K2 clutch.
Solution – To fix this issue, a remanufactured AS68RC torque converter, pump and possibly a valve body will be needed.
Failure to move forward except in manual Low
Problem – One of the more common AS68RC transmission problems is its failure to move when Drive is selected. Manually placing the gear selector in Low range can sometimes cause 1st gear to engage.
Solution – To solve this problem, a new AS68RC one way clutch will have to be installed.
