P0761: Shift Solenoid ‘C’ Performance or Stuck Off DTC Trouble Code

Inside of the valve body are a little valves that direct the flow of transmission fluid. The ECU controls these valves by sending an electrical charge to one of the shift solenoids. If there is a problem with one of them, a P0761 diagnostic trouble code will be stored.

How Serious is the Code?

While the problems associated with a P0761 DTC may not seem very serious at first, they will eventually impact drivability, and cause further damage to your transmission.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0761 include:

  • Check engine light
  • Limp mode
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
  • Slipping in-and-out of gear
  • Engine stalls
  • Getting stuck in gear
  • Vehicle won’t move when in gear
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Transmission overheats

Causes

  • Low transmission fluid
  • Dirty transmission fluid / filter
  • Frayed wiring / damaged connectors
  • Failed solenoid
  • Failed transmission pump
  • Pressure blockage
  • Valve body issue
  • TCM or ECU failure

How to Diagnose the Code?

The first thing that a mechanic should look at when diagnosing a solenoid related fault code is the level and condition of the transmission fluid. If it’s excessively dirty, or metal shavings are present, then the transmission could have serious internal damage. Regular maintenance is an easy way to extend the life of your transmission. Failing to have your transmission serviced on time, will result in catastrophic wear to internal components, which include the solenoids. It is possible to flush the transmission and clear blocked hydraulic passages. However, this may only be a temporary fix if damage has already been done to the valve body, clutches or seals.

If the transmission fluid is clean and there are no leaks, then the wiring harness and connectors should be carefully examined for signs of damage and corrosion. If no issues are found, then the shift solenoid should be tested directly following the manufacturers recommended test procedure. If the solenoid functions properly, then other components like the valve body, pressure regulator valve, or transmission pump, could be at fault.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing

Whenever a solenoid related diagnostic trouble code is present, many mechanics could be tempted to think the solenoid itself has gone bad. However wiring problems, and internal pressure issues can cause this DTC as well.

What Repairs Will Fix P0761?

  • Change the transmission fluid and filter
  • Replace failed shift solenoid
  • Replace or repair failed transmission pump
  • Repair or replace transmission valve body
  • Perform a transmission flush to clear passages
  • Repair or replace damaged wiring
  • Clean corrosion from connectors
  • Flashing or replacing PCM/TCM
  • Install a rebuilt or remanufactured transmission
