P0724: Torque Converter/Brake Switch B Circuit High DTC Trouble Code

On a modern vehicle that is equipped with an automatic transmission, the computer has to know when it is appropriate to disengage the torque convertor lock-up clutch and cruise control. Applying the brakes will automatically disengage both of these systems, because the brake switch tells the ECU when you’ve hit the brake pedal. The P0724 diagnostic trouble code lets you know that there is something wrong in this circuit.

How Serious is the Code?

Having a P0724 DTC indicates that the torque convertor clutch (TCC) may not disengage when it needs to, which could cause the engine to stall unexpectedly. It could also send the transmission into Limp Mode, which will lock it into one forward gear.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0724 DTC include:

  • Engine stalls
  • Brake light failure
  • TCC lockup failure
  • Erratic shifting pattern
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Poor engine performance

Causes

  • Misadjusted or broken brake light switch
  • Shorted or damaged wiring
  • Damaged or corroded wiring connector
  • Bad fuse or fusible link

How to Diagnose the Code?

To diagnose a P0724 OBD2 trouble code, the connectors and wiring going into the brake switch needs to be evaluated for signs of damage, shorts or corrosion. If all of that appears good, then the brake switch itself will need to be tested or adjusted. The fuses and fusible link may also need to be checked.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing

One of the most common oversights when diagnosing a P0724 DTC, is not seeing if the brake switch can be adjusted.

What Repairs Will Fix P0724?

  • Replace or adjust the brake lamp switch
  • Replace brake light fuse
  • Replace fusible link
  • Replace brake light bulb(s)
  • Replace brake light socket(s)
  • Replace or repair shorted wiring or connectors
  • Reflash PCM/ECM
