The Chrysler A604 (also called Ultradrive 41TE, 40TE, 41AE, 40TES) transmission first saw production in 1989 models. The transmission fits both two-and all-wheel-drive vehicles. It was originally paired primarily with the Chrysler 3.3 engine in vehicles with transverse engines. The Ultradrive A604 was produced at Kokomo Transmission in Kokomo, Indiana, a plant which still makes front wheel drive Chrysler automatic transmissions.
There may also have been mistaken impressions of failure due to the “limp home” feature. When the computer sensed a problem, such as a sensor giving an inappropriate reading, a code would be stored in the car’s computer and the transmission would default to second gear only, under transmission computer control, so that owners could still drive to a service location for diagnosis and/or repairs. This could have caused perceptions of failure and premature replacement.

Common Problems with the A604
Hard Shifting & Slipping: Two of the most common A604 transmission problems are slipping between the gears, or particularly hard shifts. There are a number of OE design flaws that cause these problems to occur.
Delayed forward and/or reverse engagement with a double ‘bump’ sensation – 41TE transmission
Problem – Drivers may notice a significant delay when they shift into Drive or Reverse. They may also experience a series of ‘bumps’ or ‘bucks’ when the selected gear does engage.
Solution – The retainer that separates the lockup control valve and the TCC accumulator valve may need to be replaced.
PRNDL lights malfunction – 41TE/42LE transmission (1996>)
Problem – The PRNDL lights in the driver information center (in the gauge cluster) may work properly when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, overdrive, drive and low. However, they may malfunction when the vehicle is shifted into Park or Neutral. There may be no diagnostic trouble codes or apparent transmission problems.
Solution – There may be an issue with the ignition switch, or a short in the related wiring.
Speedometer reading when the vehicle is not moving – 41TE transmission / 41TES transmission
Problem – Drivers may notice that the speedometer can jump to over 20 mph while the vehicle is stopped in gear. There may also be a jerking sensation that feels like a 1-2 shift. Gear changes may also feel unusually rough.
Solution – The most common cause of these 41TE transmission problems is a malfunctioning alternator. However there could also be a wiring problem related to the output shaft speed sensor OSS signal going back to the TCM.
Failed Torque Converter: Another common Dodge Grand Caravan transmission problem is the complete failure of the torque converter. This can be caused by a number of OE design flaws, overheating, or simply using Dexron ATF, instead of the correct Chrysler-specific Type 7176 ATF.
Another common problem is overheating. This happens when the moving parts inside the transmission are creating more friction heat than the ATF can remove. The most common cause of this condition is towing heavy loads, driving in stop/go traffic, or on mountain roads where the transmission has to shift a lot.

2001 Chrysler Town and country en D not shift
I have 2 new remanufactured transmissions just got from auction
I’m trying to sell them for 600$ a piece but don’t know how to properly identify or understand why trany can’t swap some times to make it a clean fair processes
I called dealership and gave them a part number and they said 01-04 pt cruiser and some other frame fitments but didint want to bother them to much to explain .

Tranny shifts fine and then out of no were it will down shift to 2 gear and stay there and the wl shift fine again when ever it wants to.is this what they call LIMP MODE??????
P0732 and p0700 codes already changed solonoid pack on 2002 Dodge caravan a604 trany so those codes are gone but cleaned connections and wires so now getting p0732 code?

I just need a step by step guide to go by.
Check engine light came on so I had the code red it said the camshaft position sensor was bad so I replaced that and also the starter as I was traveling down the road the same day after I changed both camshaft position sensor and starter my 2005 PT Cruiser dream Edition series 4 acting sluggish and then I heard a loud pop and it seemed to what loose power making me have to Coast to a stop . Engine would still rev up and you can still move the gear shift can you please help me figure out what is wrong with it if it has something to do with the torque converter or maybe just the pump went out or is it my Turbo altogether possibly once I got it home from being towed and let it sit a couple days check transmission fluid and it seems like there was too much in the dipstick but the transmission fluid is still red can you please help me out I’m diagnosing this problem .I haven’t even had it more than two months

Hi, i just bought a used 41te for my 02 pt cruiser and when installing ran into a problem with the flexplate holes not lieing up to used torque converter.so I called place i bought the transmission and asked if they had the flexplate that the transmission came off,yes they did,so they’ll let me have it if i come and get it,got flexplate and put it on my car but crankshaft to flexplate holes also did not line up,i put my flexplate up to used flexplate and the used one was a bit bigger.
Can’t I use my flexplate and my torque converter in the used 41te? It should work,right? Can you help me with this question,i would appreciate any input on this matter.thank you
Strangely enough, I ran into the same issue installing a used auto tranny into my 2003 PT cruiser…Turns out the torque converter bolts are offset…sooo…you have to get the first bolt into the correct hole…then the rest will line up properly…A mechanic friend of mine showed me…just keep turning the crankshaft and trying the first bolt into each of the 4 holes… when you get the first bolt into the CORRECT hole then the rest will indeed line up!
